DUBAI CRYSTAL

DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES | JULY 2008

Landmark with urban qualities: The planning for "Dubai Crystal" is based on the fundamental idea of integrating the cultural identity and historic legacy of the city into the conceptual design of a modern, sustainable urban quarter. Consideration was given not only to questions of the sustainability and ecology of intelligent architecture, but also to the immediate urban context: surrounded by mono-functional districts in which there is a high concentration of offices, "Dubai Crystal" presents itself as a living quarter with an urban quality and atmosphere. The mixed structure of living and working, cultural facilities and shops, apartments and research institutes, is reflected in the architecturally differentiated squares and urban spaces with their high-quality surroundings. Boulevards and arcades are joined with public spaces and green terraces to form a diversified urban landscape characterised by water veins and fountains. At the centre of the quarter there is a piazza, where the Dubai Properties Academy is located. The individual building structures of the quarter are staggered according to height; staircase-shaped roof terraces near the coast give way to higher structural blocks. The striking high-rise building in Sheikh Zayed Road is a landmark of the district that can be seen from afar. The tower of the five-star hotel presents itself - as do all of the public buildings - with a reflective, crystal-like external facade.
