FRISIERBARSTUTTGART, GERMANY | 1998 Where today the hairdressing salon “Frisierbar” is located, on the ground floor of a bare post-war building in the West of Stuttgart, there once used to be a chemist’s shop. In order to be able to distinguish the existing space, extensive deconstruction work needed to be done. This turned out to be a major cost and time factor. All wall coatings, a suspended ceiling, as well as an unusable stone floor including mortar board and sub-flooring were removed before starting with the designs of the interior. These were drawn up partly in form of plans and conversations with the client and partly directly on site. A hard-aggregate floor screed was chosen as floor covering which due to its high tensile strength could be laid without joints making it easier to sweep up the cut-off hair. As the project was on a tight budget, the interior fitting was planned very cost-effective. All the furniture was constructed of surface-finished formwork panels, which are very durable and chemical-resistant. The wall coverings were made of plasterboard facing and the customer mirrors are flush with the wall along the whole width of the space. A suspended ceiling was installed taking advantage of the maximum height of the room from which the space is indirectly lit. A light-band running above the mirrors provides direct lighting of the customer seats and creates a soft, frontal light and lends the visitor a friendly complexion minimising irritating shadows in the facial area.
